From Jim DeWalt
One simple way to create jobs in America
Every once in a while I hear of a story that truly makes my day…this is definitely one of them. Recently, ABC News ran a couple news stories regarding a home builder in Bozeman Montana that decided to build a house made entirely of American-made goods, from every plank of wood to every roof nail. In the end, the home included products made in 33 states across the country and offers a roadmap of sorts for how to create nearly a quarter of a million jobs.
In that newscast, the builder made a simple challenge: If EVERY builder used just 5 percent more American materials to build homes, we could create 220,000 jobs right now!
Just 5 percent!
Hard to believe, but true. The story gets even better. ABC News the contractor’s list of Made in America building, products and found they were not only often better made than, say, similar items made in China, the increase in cost was less than one percent.
ABC News has expanded the original idea, promoting a “Made in America Christmas." According to the National Retail Federation, the average American will spend $700 on holiday gifts items this year – totaling $465 billion. ABC News estimates that if money were spent entirely on US made products, it would create 4.6 million jobs.
If you’re inspired to consider Made in American gift ideas – or want to learn more about the Made in America products and story, you can get the story and view some of the thousands of responses here.
My hope is that each of us will carry the spirit of that Montana builder’s message forward. When your holiday tree (and maybe that holiday fruitcake) are in the local landfill, you’ll think about how you can continue the Made in America theme into a new and prosperous year for us all. |

State and Local taxes drop to 50-year low
According to the Washington State Department of Revenue, state and local taxes – as a percent of personal income – dropped to their lowest level in 50 years during Fiscal Year 2009. The tax burden of $93.24 ($56.70 in state taxes and $36.54 in local taxes) is the all-time lowest level for this state in the past fifty years (see Table 6). The ranking of 35th has only been lower twice – in 1981 (39th) and 2005 (37th).
While many states experienced declines in taxes relative to personal income during that period, Washington's decline changed its national ranking to 35th highest among the states in 2009 from 30th highest in 2008. The national average for Fiscal Year 2009 was $102.10, down from $111.99 the prior year. The $93.24 figure is the lowest since the Department of Revenue began tracking this statistic in 1960. For the past 10 years, the figure has ranged from $105 to $110. Even during the past three years of economic recession, Washington has remained high in average personal income, ranking 11th from the highest in 2008 (the year used for the Fiscal Year 2009 comparisons in this report), then increasing to 10th in 2009 and finally dropping slightly to 13th for 2010. |
United States business confidence improves
Business confidence – also known as The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) – improved in the U.S. to 52.7% in November, 2011 from 50.8% in October of 2011, according to the Institute of Supply Management (ISM). The PMI is a composite index of five indicators (production level, new orders, supplier deliveries, inventories, employment level), extracted through surveys to more than 400 purchasing managers from around the country, chosen for their geographic and industry diversification benefits. The business confidence survey measures the level of optimism that company managers have about the performance of the economy and how they feel about their organizations’ prospects. In a related note, attached is the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which represents the total cost of a combination of goods and services (market basket) during the established Base Period of 1982 through 1984 as it relates to costs and wages as of October 2011. Spokane Public Schools Replacement Levy is on the ballot
The Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors recently put a replacement educational program levy on the Feb. 14, 2012 ballot. The levy is a way for the Spokane community to provide almost one-quarter of the dollars necessary to offer a well-rounded education to Spokane Public Schools’ students. The levy replaces the 2009 levy approved by voters, which expires in 2012.
The levy supports classes, programs and staff: teachers for providing reasonable class sizes; counselors, career specialists, nurses and librarians; gifted and talented program; high school and middle school electives such as Advanced Placement classes; elementary band and strings program; elementary art classes; online learning; drop-out prevention programs; special education and English language learner programs; student transportation; sports, clubs and intramurals; security officers; and support staff such as custodial, maintenance, administrative and clerical.
The amount of the levy is $71.5 million for 2013, $72.5 million for 2014 and $73.5 million for 2015. It is estimated to cost taxpayers between $3.89 and $4.49 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation, depending on whether the state legislature decides to cut or maintain levy equalization assistance – a subsidy to property "poor" districts like most eastern Washington school districts. Find more information about the replacement levy at www.spokaneschools.org/levy2012. |

Cher Merrill
APR, Vice President of Marketing, PR & Communications |
Cher Merrill was born in Sioux Falls, S.D, but says she “escaped as soon as possible” and has lived in eight states, more than a lot of people ever visit!
In fact, Cher seems to always be in some kind of forward motion, whether it is jumping out of an airplane on her 45th birthday, or riding her bike across 500 miles of midwest farmland, scuba diving off the Bahamas or sailing a yacht on Lake Superior.
Her career has kept moving too, but always toward one form of public relations and communications or another. Working with regional and national companies from Minneapolis, MN to Port Angeles WA, she finally landed in Spokane with Associated Industries in 2007 as the Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing.
She has also made “attempts” at writing: Hmmm…does four non-fiction books, hundreds of national magazine and newspaper articles and a couple film scripts qualify? Perhaps, but Cher says she’s most proud of her family: a daughter who lives here in Spokane with her husband and two boys, and another daughter who resides in NYC with her husband.
As if a busy career and family isn’t enough, Cher continually offers her time in the community: Spokane Public Schools Advisory Committee, Greater Spokane Chapter PRSA, American Red Cross, United Way, Gonzaga PRSSA Advisory Professional, to name a few.
What we do know about Cher is that she is always in pursuit of excellence and adventure!

This month we feature MDI Marketing, a member, and also the company who produces our monthly newsletter.

MDI is like a Bologna Cake
By John Guarisco, Executive Manger of Creative & Marketing Services

The Member Highlight this month just happens to be the company that designs, produces and helps write Associated Industries’ monthly a.i. dialogue, including the Member Highlight; that is MDI Marketing.
It’s not as easy as it might seem – writing about your own company – but as Momma always used to say, “There’s the quick and the hungry.” Unfortunately, I have no idea what Mom meant and I’m no Forrest Gump. Then it came to me – Forrest Gump! “MDI is like a Bologna Cake.” Yes, you heard right, and if you have never tried our CFO Kay Smith’s famous Bologna Cake, you don’t know what you’re missing. The Bologna and Cream Cheese confection (?) has been a Christmas tradition in her family for going on 50 years. But I digress…
MDI is like a Bologna Cake.
There are many layers of history at MDI Marketing, just as their are many layers of a Bologna Cake. MDI Marketing as it is known today, branched off of the former Clark White & Associates on January 1, 1990, and quickly became a major player in the advertising world, with national accounts including GE Digital Energy, Little Caesars Pizza & NAPA Auto Parts.
Not many Spokane agencies can boast a 20-year run, let alone, growing stronger every year in business.
MDI has continued to cook up delicious campaigns for scores of clients, each with different layers and textures. In the process, our MDI team has become artful chefs who create perfect recipes for client success. The fact is, MDI has a winning recipe that has kept us operating a strong business and created strong campaigns for our clients.
Perfecting the Recipe for Success.
Recently MDI decided that adding another “layer” – namely becoming a member of Associated Industries (A.I) - could add to our company’s health. “We have been members of Associated Industries for four years and are now utilizing their ODS Healthcare benefits. We have also sought A.I.’s legal advice from their amazing legal team. Associated Industries has exceeded all of our expectations,” says Mark Keas, President of MDI Marketing, “and as a company that strives to do the same, we value our relationship with A.I. as a longstanding business partner.”
If you are looking for a topnotch advertising agency or marketing firm to strategically heat-up your marketing efforts, contact me, John Guarisco at 509-624-9659 ext. 101, or go to www.mdimarketing.com. There you will find information about our full service agency, and see some of the in-house award winning graphics and web designs created by Mary Patterson. We also have one of the state’s best media buyers, Bekki Whitney. Our team of marketing professionals can truly help you with all your marketing and advertising goals.

‘TIS THE SEASON
As much as we enjoy the holidays, sometimes they can bring on stress. Here are four tips to help keep a healthy, stress-free balance:
 |
Alcohol in moderation
It’s the season to be jolly, but too much alcohol can cause rather than alleviate stress. If you don't want to step off the social merry-go-round, at least remember to drink in moderation. |
 |
Get enough sleep
Too much hustle and bustle takes it's toll. Plan for as many early nights as late ones. Stay rested. |
 |
Beware the buffet
Survey party buffets before filling your plate. Choose only your favorite foods and add veggies and fruits to keep your plate balanced. |
 |
Keep moving
Regular exercise can give you the stamina to make it through the demands of a festive season. |
