Ramblings and Musings

While it may seem unnecessary, at times we as the administration and management of this organization need to be reminded that Associated Industries is a business-focused entity – and especially small business. Issues small and large that will or have the potential to have an impact upon the A.I. membership, as determined by the very nature of the organization, are of interest and in keeping with the performance of our responsibilities.

Want to start a vigorous conversation? ACA-Obamacare!

For my part, I find it terribly interesting and try to acquaint myself not only with the legislation but the process as well.  Legislation that for good or evil will have a major, life-altering impact upon our lives as individuals, as well as on the way we conduct our respective businesses is a process that is as much political as it is social. I thoroughly enjoy reading. It’s one of life’s true joys provided by living in this country and benefits afforded to me by a great third grade teacher and a public education. I recently came across the article noted below while reading the St. Maries Gazette Record, and found it thought provoking. It seemed to me it would be of interest to readers of the a.i. dialogue.

What I found additionally interesting was the amount of conversation that it generated within our offices, not the least of which was whether we should even include it 'cuz it might be too political. A fair question I suppose. Obviously, I have made the decision to include it, ‘cuz I think it is not only well written but it caused me to stop and think about the issue. And it most certainly generated spirited conversation in our offices. It is my hope that it does the same for you. It may present a point of view different from yours and it may confirm your thoughts as well, but it is an issue we all need to reflect upon and have a vigorous conversation. As always, I am interested in your comments.

How about a government car exchange?
by DAN HAMMES

So, why not a grocery exchange? Over the last few weeks there’s been a bit of a spat among politicians whether Idaho should establish a healthcare exchange.

A what? Yeah, that was our reaction as well.

Between raising kids and paying bills most of us simply did not have the time or inclination to learn about healthcare exchanges. Of course, a lot of people who did learn about healthcare exchanges had the same reaction.

A what? Healthcare exchanges are the latest gift from the federal government. They are mandated/ ordered/ decreed as part of Obamacare. The idea is a healthcare exchange will provide people a place to shop for health insurance. The theory, touted by the people who created the 2,700-page Obamacare legislation (with tens of thousands more pages of regulations to come), is healthcare exchanges will increase efficiency, lower costs and make everyone really, really happy.

And, unless voters or the Supreme Court opt to reject Obamacare, there is no turning back. That is, if the state of Idaho does not establish a healthcare exchange then the federal government will do it for us.

That has been the cause of some recent bickering among Republicans. Even though he opposes Obamacare, Gov. Butch Otter believes the state should create its own healthcare exchange. Other Republicans oppose the idea. The two sides muster all sorts and types of high-falutin’ arguments, reasons and justification to prove they are right.

But back up a minute. Does any of this really make sense? The government-types tell us that a government-operated healthcare exchange will lower prices by making the marketplace more efficient. They say the government can bring a special expertise to the exchange to connect buyers and sellers in the least costly way possible.

Wow. That sounds really good. Saving all that money will make everyone happy. But if the government can establish a healthcare exchange that will save money, why not a grocery exchange? It would be easy by comparison. Since the average family spends almost twice as much on food as healthcare, the savings would be stupendous. But why stop there?

Transportation is an even greater expense for families. Let’s have the government establish a car exchange while we’re at it. With all that government expertise and productivity applied to car buying, we could all drive a Lexus. And what about housing? Whether renting or buying, paying for a place to live is the single biggest expenditure families make every month. So let's have a housing exchange too!

Oh wait. Maybe that’s not such a great idea. We're still trying to recover from the last time the government deemed it could decide which buyers could afford what house.

Even if we ignore the fact that the cost of operating the government -run healthcare exchanges will be added to the price of health insurance, it just doesn't pass the sniff test. What evidence can supporters cite that a government-operated marketplace, whether managed by the state government or the federal government, would save money? Healthcare exchanges look suspiciously like one of those ideas that sound great when read from a teleprompter, but don’t work so well in the real world.

Spokane Public Schools replacement levy fast facts

girl

  • Thirteen school districts in Spokane County will have a levy on the February 14 ballot.
  • The 2012 levy is not a new tax; it replaces the expiring 2009 levy.
  • The replacement levy will not bring new dollars to Spokane Public Schools.
  • The 3-year replacement levy covers 2013, 2014, 2015.
  • Levies represent approximately 23 percent of Spokane schools’ operating budgets.

How much will the levy cost property owners? The levy is a property tax. Property owners will pay between $3.89 (the current levy rate) and $4.49 per $1,000 assessed property value, depending on whether state funding for Spokane Public Schools is reduced.

Levies are the primary way communities support local education. More than 80 percent of levy dollars go to programs that either aren’t funded, or are only partially funded by the state. It varies by school district, but many districts use levies to support:

  • Student transportation (to/from school and for afterschool events)
  • Art, music and drama
  • Extracurricular (sports) and co-curricular activities
  • Technology
  • College credit in the classroom
  • Textbooks and materials
  • High school drop-out prevention programs
  • All day kindergarten
  • Support staff (custodial, library, maintenance, security, administrative, clerical)
  • Counselors and nurses

Quality public schools are essential to maintain a vibrant community. Today’s students are tomorrow’s small business owners, CEOs, employees and more. Providing the learning tools and skills today will help them transition to post-secondary education and their careers later in life, and our business community will benefit by having a talented workforce pool to choose from. No Adult Left Behind: How can adults keep learning?

Inventor Henry Ford said: “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.” But how can we as adults keep learning when we lead busy lives?
Here are some suggestions:

  • Sign up for a computer course. Learn to use new applications or software.
  • Visit museums and other interesting sites.
  • Take fifteen minutes a day to learn something new. It's faster than ever to get answers and information with Internet search engines. Expand your “mental file cabinet” by adding new bits of knowledge every day.
  • Join your library’s book club or a community group. Sign up for a class at your local college.
  • Watch informational television shows and see plays.

Make learning a top priority, expand your interests and, as Henry Ford suggested, you'll never grow old! For more tips about your health, tune in each day to “Your HEALTH Counts Minute” on one of these fine stations:

Make a Move with Mobile
A hot topic for 2012 is how companies can successfully integrate mobile media into their marketing strategies. So why is mobile the next big thing for online retailers? Here are four stats to wrap your head around:

  • 91% of all U.S. citizens have their mobile device within reach 24/7 (Morgan Stanley)
  • 70% of all mobile searches result in action within one hour (Mobile Marketer)
  • Mobile coupons get 10 times the redemption rate of traditional coupons (Borrell Associates)
  • Mobile ad spend worldwide is estimated at $3.3 billion in 2011 and predicted to hit $20.6 billion in 2015 (mobiThinking)

These are big, impressive numbers for such a small device, and still a clever way to guarantee a big payoff for you in 2012. Mobile offers companies a chance to cut through the clutter of other channels and communicate with consumers in a seemingly one-to-one communication.

Adding mobile marketing to your 2012 mix allows you to develop a multichannel, robust e-commerce strategy to create long-term customer relationships and increase both retention and sales.

Mobile is an untapped opportunity for many retailers with brick and mortar stores to easily capture email opt-ins, offer coupons and utilize QR codes. Retailers need to arm their associates with smartphones and provide compelling reasons why to buy.

Many of the issues of 1910 are still faced today: national debt, labor relations, monopoly battles, work safety and healthcare. Still, the 1910’s were a decade of great change for America, a time when the United States came of age and was first considered a world leader. 1910 was also the year Associated Industries was formed by members, for members. How well do you know your history…Which one did NOT happen in 1910?

  1. Mary J. “Babe” Downing/Scranton/Bailey, one of the first white females who came to the Spokane area,  wrote her a memoir entitled “Why Did I Sell Spokane Falls” in 1910.
  2. Washington Water Power (WWP, now Avista Utilities) was incorporated on March 13, 1910.
  3. Prominent pioneer George K. Stocker, paid the first fare on a new street car around the Lincoln and Sprague Curve in 1910.
  4. In 1910, downtown Spokane, which now hosts Bloomsday, the largest timed foot race in the world, was the site of numerous, well advertised, much-anticipated foot races.
